Per the U.S. EPA, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion in 2018 was from the transportation sector, accounting for 36% of all emissions. The NY Sierra Club is sponsoring a seminar to discuss issues related to the adoption of zero-emission watercraft in New York State. New York could lead the country in eliminating harmful boat emissions and the spillage of marine fuel and engine oil into state waterways. After all, New York has a vital navigable river with two international ports and hundreds of miles of shoreline on the ocean, shoreline on our two Great Lakes, and on thousands of other state lakes too.
Senator Todd Kaminsky (9th Senate District) was a co-sponsor of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, enacted in June 2019. Senator Kaminsky will kick off the seminar by discussing these efforts since the Act was passed to staff the Climate Action Council and get the Act’s framework underway.
The below panelists will offer several different perspectives:
- Wayne Arden, moderator, Sierra Club volunteer
- Karen Imas, Senior Director of Programs, Waterfront Alliance
- Daniel Steingart, Co-Director of the Columbia Electrochemical Energy Center, Columbia University
- Hans Thornell, CEO and founder of Green City Ferries
- Roger Downs, Conservation Director of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter
We’ll conclude the seminar by discussing possible legislation that could accelerate New York’s progress in adopting zero-emission watercraft.
