Sustainability Series: 520mile Waterfront & Management Plan

New York City's 520 miles of waterfront includes natural shoreline with beaches and coastal marshes along with hardened edge for industrial, port, recreational boating, and other uses. Every decade, The Dept. of City Planning produces a Comprehensive Waterfront Management Plan, the most recent being last year's. It focuses on Climate Resiliency and Adaptation, Public Access, Economic Opportunity, Water Quality and Natural Resources, Ferries, and Governance. Our main speaker is Michael Marrella, who shepherded this plan to completion. Our two discussants are Tyler Taba & John McLaughlin; Judith Weis, Moderator

  • MICHAEL MARRELLA, AICP is the Director of Waterfront and Open Space Planning for the NYC Dept. of City Planning.  He advises the City Planning Commission and acts as primary liaison to stakeholders including elected officials, community organizations, and private sector entities on matters of land use and economic development related to the waterfront and open spaces. Michael was the Project Dir. for Vision 2020 - and more.

  • TYLER TABA is the senior manager for climate policy at Waterfront Alliance. He develops climate change policy and strategy, leading the coordination and convening of the Rise to Resilience coalition. He identifies changes and trends in climate change that dictate new strategies.

  • JOHN McLAUGHLIN, Managing Director, Office of Ecosystem Services, NYC Department of Environmental Protection. He is the Bureau Director's senior advisor on citywide ecosystem restoration projects, water quality improvement research (e.g. using ribbed mussels & tidal marshes) - 33 years in this field.
