It consists of a 20,000 seat basketball arena and 16 high-rises in the middle of a very congested area near downtown Brooklyn. There are significant environmental and health issues, and concern about a closed door developer-driven process. Also troubling is the State’s use of eminent domain for a private economic development that stands to primarily enrich one developer.Through the Atlantic Yards Task Force, Sierra Club NYC has connected with many heighborhood groups opposing this project. itical action. The Sierra Club hopes to stop this project and then work with the neighboring groups to create a more sustainable vision for the area that has community support, and is less environmentally destructive.
